Where did the porch swings at West End Square go?

During Memorial Day weekend, several of the porch swings at West End Square were damaged by forceful swinging. This made it clear to us at Downtown Dallas Parks Conservancy (DDPC) that it was time to design a solution that makes this much-loved park feature more durable. So, the porch swings were temporarily removed from The Porch. Our goal is to develop a modification to the porch swings to make them more robust without sacrificing what made this element special in the first place.

This may be easier said than done, so we are updating this blog periodically to keep you in the loop on what is happening, and how we reach the final outcome.

June 2021

The porch swings are removed and taken to the shop. DDPC convenes a meeting with the structural engineer, general contractor, and the lead architect for the park to discuss the issue.

The team has crafted a plan, and is developing a prototype that will be put to the test in the park. The goal is to install the mock-up porch swing in early August.

Stay tuned, we will post an update here soon.

The Campaign for Downtown Parks

To be frank, this porch swing renovation is outside of the construction budget for West End Square, and an additional cost to Downtown Dallas Parks Conservancy.

PfDD is committed to building all four of the Priority Parks envisioned for Downtown. More than that, we are committed to supporting their long-term care in partnership with the City of Dallas. We need your support to get to the finish line and assure a bright future for your Downtown neighborhood parks.
