Calling all Yankee Doodle Dandies: America will be observing its birthday in just a few weeks. If you’re wondering where you can best celebrate our nation’s independence, look no further than Downtown Dallas, where you’ll find plenty of events the whole family is sure to enjoy. Don your red, white and blue and get ready for epic eats, impressive displays of fireworks and a generous helping of genuine American culture.
What better way to commemorate Independence Day than with an ice-cold beer? We recommend the fourth annual Red, White and Brew, happening at Noble Rey Brewing Company (2636 Farrington St.) in the Design District. This year’s event takes place on Saturday, June 30th, and will showcase three NEIPAs (hazy IPAs), including the return of Noble Rey’s Tropical Combat Firefighter (a fan favorite). But that’s not all — expect a total of 18 taps inside and six taps outside, meaning you can toast your heart out to the U.S. of A. The party’s $20 admission price includes three free brews and a keepsake pint glass.
If there’s nothing you love more on the Fourth than a good snap, crackle and boom, consider starting the party early on July 3rd at Red White and Boom on the Bridge. Set up camp on the Continental Avenue Pedestrian Bridge and watch the rockets’ red glare give proof through the night over the iconic Dallas skyline. The pre-show festivities kick off at 6 p.m. with live music and plenty of food truck grub.
The next day, head on over to Fair Park Fourth, arguably the most beloved fireworks show in the city. This event is free to the public and starts with patriotic performances, musical entertainment, face painting, water games, concession treats and more, so you can easily make a whole day of it for the whole family. Secure your spot inside Cotton Bowl Stadium (3750 The Midway) by 9:30 p.m. — that’s where you’ll find the best seats in the house.
If you’re looking to stay active that Wednesday, consider signing up for Five on the 4th at Klyde Warren Park (2012 Woodall Rodgers Fwy.). Choose from a five-mile run, five-mile family bike ride, two-mile walk (including one for the pups) and multiple kid races. After you’ve checked off your exercise for the day, stick around for face painting, music, balloon artists and other festive activities. Proceeds benefit the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas.
Just because the kiddos are out of school, it doesn’t mean the learning has to stop. Introduce them to a whole new world with an Old Fashioned Fourth at Dallas Heritage Village (1515 S. Harwood St.). Kids can get a taste of early America by touring the village, visiting with costumed characters and playing Victorian-era games. Just make sure to pack your picnic baskets so you can help your little explorers keep their energy up. Tickets are only $5, and entry is free for children 12 and younger.
Lastly, head over to the Meyerson Symphony Center (2301 Flora St.) this July 4th for a concert to remember. Pre-concert festivities include food-for-purchase in the lobby, including hot dogs, ice cream and chips. Then take your seats for Dallas Winds: A Star-Spangled Spectacular, featuring a repertoire of American favorites by John Philip Sousa and other great composers.
